About Yantang Stone

A carving workshop in Huian, Quanzhou — making portrait, religious and landscape sculpture for clients in Vietnam, Taiwan, China and further afield.

Yantang Stone Carving Co., Ltd. is a stone carving workshop based in Huian County, Quanzhou, Fujian, China. We take on custom commissions — a portrait bust from two photographs, a temple figure that has to match an existing canon of proportion, a garden piece for a hotel courtyard — and we carve them in the workshop rather than subcontracting the work out.

Huian is one of the places Chinese stone carving is traditionally said to come from, and the trade is still thick on the ground here: quarries, block yards, carving sheds, and the people who finish and crate the work. Being inside that cluster is why we can select a specific block for a specific commission instead of taking whatever is on hand, and why an awkward one-off piece is a normal job rather than a problem.

Most of our work now travels overseas, mainly to Vietnam and Taiwan, China. That has changed how we work more than anything else. Clients cannot walk into the yard and look at the stone, so we photograph everything: the block before it is cut, the clay maquette from four angles, each carving stage, the finished surface, and the crate closing. We handle the export documentation ourselves because a missing certificate at the port costs the client more than any saving on the carving.

We are a workshop, not a factory line. If a commission is not a good fit — the stone cannot hold the detail you want, or the timeline is not physically possible — we will tell you at the quoting stage rather than after you have paid a deposit.

Where the work comes from

The trade we work inside is old; the way it reaches overseas clients is new.

  • Tang – SongThe carving trade takes root

Stone carving in the Huian area is documented from the Tang and Song dynasties, driven by temple building along the Fujian coast.

  • Ming – QingTemple and ancestral work

The trade broadens into temple figures, ancestral halls and architectural carving, and the workshop tradition of passing skills down by working beside a master takes hold.

  • Twentieth centuryMonuments and export

Carving extends into public monuments and, later, overseas commissions as the district's block yards and finishing shops become an export cluster.

  • TodayThe same workshop logic, new markets

Most of the work we take on now travels overseas. Clients cannot walk into the yard, so the whole process is documented in photographs and the export paperwork is handled in-house.

How we work

A workshop, not a trading company

There is no intermediary between you and the people cutting the stone. The person who answers your enquiry is the person who walks the yard to select the block and signs off the finished surface.

  • Quotes are per piece, after we have seen the reference
  • The clay maquette is approved before any stone is cut
  • Every stage is photographed and dated
  • Crating, loading photographs and export documents are in-house
  • If a job is not a good fit, we say so before you pay a deposit
